Does Georgia State law give employees the right to see and have a copy of their personnel file? Any clues appreciated. Thank you.

I can find nothing on the GA state website to suggest that an employee in GA has the guaranteed right to see his/her personnel file.

I was terminated from the state of Georgia. The termination letter stated that the dismissal was in the best interest of the organization. IThe dismissal was sudden and unprofessional. I was a top performer and had very good performance reviews. I understand that in the state of Georgia the at will law leaves an employee with no recourse. O.K., I guess the law is the law, however, since my dismissal, I have pursued employment, but I'm coming up short. I have a laundry list of qualifications and an almost stellar resume, yet I am not getting any bites. If the law does not require the employer to give you a copy of your personnel file, what recourse does an X employee have to find out what is being said about them, when perspective employers request a reference. What if the x employer is black-balling me and preventing me from getting a fair shake with future employment. What can I do?

You can ask a trusted friend to pose as a prospective employer and call for references and see what they say. I know this sounds sneaky (and it probably is), but I know a number of HR professionals who would suggest it.

Are you simply not getting calls for interviews, or are you getting interviews and then not getting the job?

If the first, it is EXTREMLY unlikely that your former employer has anything to do with it, since employers simply do not have the time and resources to call for references before deciding who to interview. They don't call any former employers until after the interview and have decided who are their top choices.
