I am a stock person for a VERY largely known department store in California, which the number of employees exceeds 200 (This location). I have only been employed for under 2 weeks (when the store first opened). I called in today because of a medical problem i have (private) & my supervisor told me he wants me to come in to talk to him & his boss today for termination, To me this sounds like a threat. I'm soposed to have surgery for the problem in NOV, but wasn't planing on going (fear of getting fired, which doctor doesn't believe). I'm planing on showing up for work on my next shift. I obviously didn't show up for the "meeting", besides, if i did, i could have worked right? I just need to know is it legal for them to fire you for being sick even though you called in within a reasonable time?

Yes, it is legal, so long as the reason that they are doing so is not discriminatory. This is true especially because of your short duration with the company.

You say you did not go to the meeting as you were requested. Instead, you are planning to go to work tomorrow. You can expect that you will be terminated then (if you haven't been already).

Let me know if you have any other questions.
