I am planning on giving a 2 week notice to my current employer. Since I am going to a competitor I am afraid that will let me go the same day. If I give notice, and don't get paid from the employer for those 2 weeks, may I collect or am I eligible for unemployment for those 2 weeks before I start my new job? Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

You may be. However, I believe there is a one-week waiting period in CA before benefits are payable, and that back week is not payable until you have been unemployed for several weeks. At most, therefore, it appears just one week MIGHT be payable.
