At the first of the month, I went with my supervisor to a meeting that I thought was to discuss our web site and mission statements. It wasn't, I was fired. I was told it was because my personal life was too hectic and that I had too many absences. The week before this happened I had missed 2 days due to a family emergency, when I called and talked to my supervisor, she told me to take as much time as I needed and to let her know if I needed more time. I only took 2 days, and when I came back the only thing she told me was that some creditors had called me there at work, and we could write a letter so they would stop calling me at work, and that was all she told me about being gone. I don't understand why I got fired, I had sick, vacation and person days available to take. I hadn't been written up for absences before at all. Several people have told me that I should talk to a lawyer or report it, but I honestly don't know where to go or who I could talk to about the situation. If anyone could give me any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee because the employee may have filed for bankruptcy in the past.

Otherwise, an employer can terminate an employee for absenteeism or for other concerns, such as too much personal distractions at work so long as the employee is not being singled out for other discriminatory reasons, such as the person's age, disability status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, gender or any other status that may be protected in your state.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
