I live in the Ogden/Salt Lake City area of Utah. My employer recently informed me that for the local deliveries I make, I now have to drive my own vehicle as the company vehicle is no longer accessible. How do I find out what current mileage rates are? Is it true that there is a cap to how much it is legal for me to be reimbursed per mile? I would appreciat eany information I can get at this time. I have been able to find out that the federal rate has been temporarily increased to $0.485 per mile, but am not sure if that transfers down to regular people level. The boss says it is illegal for him to pay me that much. I need facts so I know I am getting a fair deal. Thanks.

That applies to everybody. Any reimbursement in excess of that rate is taxable wages. However, there is no law in your state that requires the employer to reimburse you at all. BTW, the rate for 2006 is 44.5 cents.

I want to thank you for getting back to me so quickly. And I also learned that the state rate for mileage is currently $0.40. Thanks again for your input.

What do you mean the "state rate"? According to this publication, Utah follows IRS regulations for determining the taxability of payments to employees. See page 5.
