At the end of shift, managment does not say to work overtime. We clock out and leave. We work an alternative work schedule. So i guess my questions are A.Can they hold us accountable for not working overtime even though never asked? B. Just want to settle this question, Can an employee leave at end of shift with out saying anything, or are they required to be released from work before they can leave. Heard every answer from everyone but want to know real answer. Only because if we cant get ahold of management and hit OT Then we can be held accountable for hitting overtime So kinda catch 22. But if required to be release from work, then can you get job abandonment even though your scheduled day has ended? Any help would do thanks.

A.Can they hold us accountable for not working overtime even though never asked? Yes, but why would they? That would be a bizarre thing to do.
B. Just want to settle this question, Can an employee leave at end of shift with out saying anything, or are they required to be released from work before they can leave. That is entirely up to your employer. The norm is that employees leave at the end of their scheduled work day unless they have been told otherwise however. Most employers require that any overtime work be specifically authorized before it can be worked, in order to keep control of their payroll costs.

I can't help but think there's more to the story than you've related here. Management holding employees accountable for overtime they were never told to work just doesn't make any sense. Might employees have been told to stay until the job was done?
