I live in the state of Michigan. The employer that my wife works for has just told all of his Supervisors that it is mandatory for them to work 1 hour each day for free. They are all paid hourly with overtime. They were told that he would deduct 1 hour each day from what ever they are clocked in for. Can this possibly be legal? If not what action should be taken. What precautions should be taken to prevent any repercussions?

If the supervisors are exempt, the employer can force the employee to work as many hours as he/she wishes. However, he/she cannot deduct time from the employee if the time worked is less than he/she demands. (The emploeye can still be subject to disciplinary action for not working the required schedule.)
If the supervisors are non-exempt, it is illegal to force the employee to work "off the clock." Employees must be paid for all hours that he/she works.
Are the supervisors exempt or non-exempt?
