My company in Maryland is closed the day after Thanksgiving. I am required to either use a vacation day or not get paid for the day. There is no option to work. Can they do this?

If you are nonexempt, that is perfectly legal.

If you are an exempt employee, it is still legal, unless you have no vacation available; then they would have to pay you anyway.

Could you explain what an exempt and nonexempt employee are? I am not familiar with what those terms mean? Thanks.

Based on your job duties, and means you are either exempt from the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, or you are not exempt and the minimum wage and overtime provisions apply to you.

I am a pressman at a print shop. I get paid an hourly rate and overtime when applicable.

Then your employer requring you to either use a vacation day or be off without pay that day is perfectly legal.
