My Current employer has just put in place some new rules for attendance. If an employee is on time and works every scheduled hour for one calander month they will be awarded with a check for $50. However, they have put a penalty on its employees that is as follow.
1. If you are late one day in a month you loose the $50 bonus, If you leave early one day you loose the bonus.
2. If you are late a second time you have to pay your health insurance for that month(approx. $220)
3. If you call in sick one day you loose the bonus
4. If you call in sick a second day, whether being two consecutive days or any other day of that month, you pay your health insurance.
5. If you are late one day and call in sick another you pay insurance
I have no problem with 1 and 3, but I Question the legality of making an employee pay for his or her own health insurance when it is provided for them 100% free from the company. I don't see how an employer could legally fine an employee for being sick twice in a month. What is the point of having insurance, to me it would be for when you are sick, so how can you be penalized.
Maybe there is nothing wrong with what they are doing, but I guess what I want to know is this even legal to do.
Any help would be appreciated
