Is it legal for the adoption agency to charge more than the fee outlined in the statute for searching for the birth family?

I ask because I am taken aback by the fees asked by the agency who handled my adoption.

Additionally, I would like to ask if I can use a different CI than the one at the agency. We simply clash and she is more than uncooperative, and also only available on Mondays - a part timer!

Thank you! :)

I suspect that you can use any private investigator that you want to find this out. Some states have registries for adoptees, so it may be cheaper and faster to see if there is a state registry that you can use. usually, if bio parents agreed to this, then they will release the adoption file or a copy of it redacted if there is not authority to release privacy law protected information.
