We are OR residence and my husband is behind in child support because a few years back the company he was working for closed the doors and he was unemployed for a time. Needless to say child support doesn't have any allowances for situations like this i.e. we had to cut way way back on any of the family spending to make allowances for this situation. We contacted child support enforcement agencies but, it doesn't matter if the dad is going thru a tough time it just piles up. He is back to work and we would like to adopt internationally and apply for grants and fundraisers for the fees and feel pretty confident that we can raise the money for the actual adoption and are now able to provide monthly for all our children but, we just can't get that HUGE child support bill down. The judge at the time even told his ex to get a job and she didn't and wouldn't (and he paid alimony and school fees for her to be trained in the medical field) anyway I could go on forever about the unfairness of it but, won't bore you. Will that effect an international adoption approval? Thank you

Yes, it most likely will affect trying to adopt. The reality is, that your husband has a legal obligation to pay the CS arrears. Once that is done, the two of you will be able to adopt, provided that you can prove that he can support an adopted child while still supporting his older children.

Child support enforcement enforces- you should have gone to the court immediately and requested temporary reduction in child support based on layoff and unemployment and supplied supporting documentation, so that is maybe your fault for not pursuing the change properly in the right way. I think you will need to get child support timely before trying to adopt, but visit http://www.adoption.com to learn more about what is considered and weighed in the process. It may be that with a certain type of adoption, the child support past issues may not matter.

We did go to the child support agencies and because my husband had previously worked for my father's family business (and prob made more than he would have at the same position in an unrelated person's company) that went bankrupt they didn't believe him and even garnished his unemployment checks!!! So, we did all that we felt we were capable of (even got an attorney that said he was "going to stop the bleeding" nothing so far and that was almost 3 years ago. There are still some flaws in the system when all the evidence is there (court documents from my father's company) and you jump thru the hoops and still can't get anywhere. As if my father would declare bankruptcy just so my husband wouldn't have to pay child support! Ridiculous! We realize it's because of all the deadbeat dads giving a bad rap to all dads but, up until that time we were on time and current with every payment. Something needs to be done about all the deadbeat moms that live off the child support and refuse to work to support their children, it seems very preducial! Maybe someday the law will swing the other way and balance in the middle! We do believe that my husband is financially responsible for his children but to the point that we can't afford to live? Thanks for allowing me to air this!!!!
