Hi,
My friend works in a fast food establishment recently acquired by a franchise. The franchise is now requiring all employees sign a document stating that in the event of a cash draw shortage, the shorted amount would be deducted from the employee's paycheck.

I have checked out Dol.gov and the link below that has been previously given. From what I gather, the employer cannot withhold wages unless they are voluntarily assigned, which would be the purpose of the document. Is this an accurate assessment? Can the employer terminate my friend for refusal to sign the document?

Any input would be greatly appreciated

That link is currently nonoperational. This from their FAQs:

When may an employer withhold an employee’s wages?
A. An employer may only withhold an employee’s wages when the employer is required by state or federal law, the employer has the employee’s prior written authorization, or there is a reasonable good faith dispute as to the amount of wages due, including the amount of any counterclaim, reimbursement, recoupment or set-off asserted by the employer.

But yes, they can be terminated if they refuse to sign.
