This is a general question. If one party makes a motion for a continuance, does the other party's attorney have an opportunity to object to the motion (or give reasons why it shouldn't be granted) or will the judge just automatically grant the motion?

Yes, the other side has a chance to object. Just to note just because someone asks for a continuance doesn't mean the judge will automatically grant it... it's up to the judge to decide one way or another.

usually, if it the 1st motion for continuance, it will be granted if it is reasonable; the other side can contest at anytime to the court, but usually if it is not abused the request will be granted
