Washington State
I recently started this job that is a manufacturing/production company. Most of the employees are some type of minority (Vietnamese, Hispanic, Czech, etc...) like myself, however, a young man and myself are the only African-Americans, so really, minorities are the majority at the company.
Yesterday, for no reason at all, this employee who doesnt look my way or speak for any reason at all, who I can also feel is either a sexist or racist, out the blue states to me, "Oh in case you didn't know, I am the shop nazi!" But he is laughing and giggling and trying to get the attention of a young lady that works in the office. I dont think she found this too funny either.
I spoke with my supervisor about it, and for some reason it seemed as if he was trying to defend/take up for him going on about the stress from work and all the responsibilities the employee has. But I didnt say anything to him AT ALL for him to make this comment to me. He later said he would speak with the production manager/HR person, but said nothing to me today as to if he did or not.
It is a small company (50+/-), am I wrong for defending myself? I am going to speak with my supervisor again on Monday and ask if he spoke with either the production manager or with the employee, and ask for an apology in writing. If he has not yet spoken with them, what should be my next approach?? Am I being too rash? My boyfriend thinks I shouldnt have said anything and just started documenting everything down. I totally disagree with him.

A single comment is not enough for a claim of discrimination or harassment. If the comments continue, by all means document then and report it but they have no legal obligation to tell you what action they have taken against him and they are not required to make him provide you with a written apology. Their only legal obligation is to make the offensive behavior stop, period.
