a divorced friend in north carolina needs to settle custody of a child but has no $ for a lawyer.
child lives with friend & ex has visitation as they work out but friend gets no
$ from ex at all for child. attempt made to set up mediation to settle custody but friend was told to get a lawyer. any way to settle custody without
a lawyer? friend also plans to move out of state eventually & needs to get
this settled first. ex can be abusive and many times doesn't pay bills & has no
phone and sometimes no electricity in residence. unsettling to say the least to leave a child with this person. very appreciative of any advice.

Was any custody, visitation and child support court ordered when your friend got divorced?

If friend is not the legal guardian of the child, just go pick up the child and get the police to help since there would be no legal grounds for the friend to have the kid unless pursuant to court order, legal guardianship, or some legal document. Friend, from what you say, has no authority to have the child, much less move out od state with the child.

no, and the father has no $ anyway. the mother fully supports the child.
the child has lived with the mother & visited the father and they have just worked it out. but the mother intends eventually to move out of state and really needs to have custody established because father has in the past
taken the child and run off for a while in anger towards the mother. she is
remarried also.
