On behalf of my husband, ED,I am inquiring. ED is 62 yrs. old, and works as a HVAC mechanic Class I for a prestigous Georgia college funded by the State of Georgia. He has 30 yrs. exp. in HVAC, and is a very consciencous accomodating employee. Recently, two of his much younger co-workers were
promoted to Class II HVAC mechanic, both of whom were hired less than 2 years ago. ED has been there 5 years. Ed spoke to his superior regarding a promotion, but was turned down.

ED overheard his superior tell one of the co-workers that he put him on the spot when he didn't show up to help him that weekend. And, the super told the co-worker that his friend had to do without Air-conditioning the entire weekend. Ed suspected that these two co-workers were given promotions/raises as favors for doing off-duty, outside work for his supervisor. ED confirmed his regrets with another co-worker with the same greviencies.

This is where the politics come in.... If this practice is true, Is there any legal law that prohibits supers from giving promotions/raises to employees for doing personal work for them on the side? Is this descrimination? Does Ed have any options?

up against a brick wall.....

Is this descrimination? No.

Does Ed have any options? I rather doubt school administration supports a policy of promotion based on personal favors rather than on merit and technical proficiency. Ed is free to lodge a complaint with the proper college officials.
