I have been working for my boss for 2 years. Since day one, he has yelled during staff meetings, used profane language during staff meetings and in everyday life. What can I do about this behavior and is this worthy of filing a complaint for a hostile work environment?

What you describe is not a hostile work environment in the legal meaning of that phrase.

If your boss is the company owner or president, then your choices are to continue to tolerate it or find a job elsewhere. If your boss is not the top dog, then you are free to go to human resources or someone in more senior management to complain about his behavior. Since the boss isn't doing anything illegal, they don't have to do anything though.

Thanks Beth! Actually, I work for a non-profit in Arizona, and my boss is actually not "the" boss. He answers to a board of directors, so should I go to them? We also don't have an HR dept, but my handbook states that I must go to my boss with any complaints. What should I do?

It would be a courtesy to tell your boss that his use of profanity and the yelling during staff meetings is very distressing to you and the rest of the staff and ask him if he would please refrain. If he makes an honest effort to do so, then cut him some slack even if he has some set-backs (this behavior is likely habitual with him so he's going to need to work hard to change it.)

If that doesn't work, then you should contact someone on the BOD.
