Ok about 4 months ago there was a fire where we live and it started in apartment below us came up outside of building and into our apartment.

everyone made it out ok but we had no renters insurance and we lost alot.

But here is the problem all the tenants were allowed to go back into the apartments to get what was salvagable except for us. Two of the rooms in ours were condemed until the roof was stabalized so they said we had to wait. So we waited and waited and kept calling to see when it would be done and to find out cause of the fire. We kept getting the run around and alot of rude attitudes from office.

Then one day i was driveing home and seen a big dumpster with alot of our stuff in it. So i went to the office and asked what was going on and why our stuff was being thrown away and they say now they never asked us to wait till roof was stabalized and we took total loss from the beginning and were never going to be allowed to go back in . Which is a very large lie.

So now i have asked them again where our belongings have went and now they tell me that everyone involved in fire lost everything but thats also a lie since the other tenants were able to go in and get stuff not destroyed by fire.

all our dressers were thrown out but yet all the drawers were emptied first which i was very upset about sinmce my wife had a very old jewelary collection in her dresser. along with the fact there were a couple dozen containers with lids that didn't get hurt by the fire that were filled with computer equip that i had built over the years of owning a computer shop.

so yes we didn't have insurance at the time due to my being dissabled and wife being only one working with 3 kids money was tight and i know this hurts us. But isn't there something we can do since everyone else was allowed to go back in but we weren't to collect items. and all we have gotten so far is alot of lies as to what happened and alot of attitude from office includeing the manager and their insurance agent at one point driveing my pregnant wife into tears yelling and screaming at her i mean it was bad and there were people who seen it.

we did take a total loss but shouldn't have since all other tenants were allowed to go back in. and still to this day i ask them what was cause of fire and they say we still don't know but yet the insurance has payed them since they are rebuilding now. I just feel extreamlly screwed here

Go get an attorney, sue them, and demand a settlement for the items you were not allowed to claim. Another approach is to file a claim with the insurer of the apartment under the owner's liability coverage for the amount of the items that you saw in the dumpster that you were not allowed to claim. Either way, I suggest consultation with an attorney.
