Can you hire a child as a general contractor? My situation is that I run a small business in which I make jewelry. Often I need help and my daughter is not available. Her best friend has learned all the techniques we use to make jewelry but she is younger than 14. Because of child labor laws I can not hire her, but could I hire her as a general contractor?

If she's not allowed to work under child labor laws, she's not allowed to work under child labor laws. Calling her a contractor doesn't change that.

And to be precise, the term is "independent contractor". A general contractor is someone who coordinates erecting a building.
