I am a preschool teacher in the Cleveland, OH area and I have a few questions....first off, I was asked to stay over 30 min. to cover for another teacher. 2 days later I was told to take an extra 30 min. long lunch break so they didn't have to pay me for the overtime. I'm full time, 9a-6p M-F and get an hour unpaid lunch break. I wanted the money, thats why I stayed over...can they do this?

Question 2 is for an 8 hour shift, aren't you supposed to get 2 paid 15 minute breaks as well as an unpaid lunch break?

There are no laws in Ohio requiring meal periods or rest breaks for employees 18 years of age and older.

And, it is permissible for the employer to shorten your work hours one day to compensate for the additional time worked on another day, as long as it is in the same workweek. This is because overtime in Ohio must only be paid when over 40 hours is worked in a workweek.

Based on the facts in your post, I don't see any violation here.
