Hi,

I have met with an accident in a parking lot in Illinois. My car is a rented car. The other car I have damaged is parked in the parking lot(no body was inside). A neighbour who is not connected with this accident had already called police . Any how my self and the other party (whose car I have damaged) have agreed to settle our issue out side court.police came and did'nt file any report as we have agreed to settle our issue with in ourselves.
But when police asked me who was driving the car, as I don't had the proper license I did a mistake of giving false information that some body was driving the car and I don't know who is that guy. But police warned me If Iam giving false information I will be sent to jail.

this has happened few days before. If I admit to police now that out of panic I have given a false information, will they leave me or put in jail or what will be the implications.

But we did't get any police report for the accident as we (myself and the person whose car I have hit) have been settling this out side court.

Please advise on this.

Expecting your early reply

DON'T TELL THEM.

The police cannot just arbitrarily send you to jail. You'd have to be prosecuted, convicted of a crime by a jury (with guilt proven beyond a reasonable doubt), and then a judge would have to decide that jail was appropriate rather than, say, a fine or community service (just like on Law and Order or whatever other TV shows you watch). None of these are going to happen.

It's technically illegal to lie to the police, however, I can assure you that they can't prove that you were lying or prove that you were driving the car (unless you admit it to them, in which case you *would* have something to worry about.)

You are much better off NOT admitting it than admitting it.

In the future, if you find it necessary to not tell the police something, just say, "I prefer not to answer," and refuse to answer.
