I own a condo in Massachusetts. When you are late paying your condo fees, you are charged $15.00 extra.

However, I was late beyond the half of the month due to certain financial problems. The association wrote a demand to pay letter to me from an attorney and charged me an extra $75.00 and threatened me to pay within ten days or else I will face additional legal penalties. Is this legal to be treated like this?

Is there anything I can do to stop this kind of behavior? Isn't the association supposed to represent us instead of threatening us without even considering our plight?

Help me get some answers.

Thank you.

I cannot really advise. You need to look at the condominium association agreement and read the penalties for late payment section and consult an attorney. It may be that they are wrong, but the association agreement would be the guide.
