In Utah. My wife and I have been looking into having our first child. I asked her to check with her employer about paid maternity leave. They will not offer her paid maternity leave, although they do give her 3 months time off, unpaid. We are extremely upset, because we can't afford to live if she isn't making some kind of money. Does anyone know of any other alternatives? Can she file for short or long term disability with her insurance? Can she use a third party insurance provider? Is there anything from the government we can use? Thanks a lot for the info.

They will not offer her paid maternity leave, although they do give her 3 months time off, unpaid. Presumably this is 12 weeks of FMLA leave, which is unpaid.

Can she file for short or long term disability with her insurance? Does your wife currently have a disability income benefit, whether through her employer or directly with a private insurance carrier?

Can she use a third party insurance provider? Your wife is welcome to contact some independent insurance agents and ask about disability income insurance and obtain some quotes.

Is there anything from the government we can use? No.

"Is there anything from the government we can use?"

Nothing labor law related, but if your income drops low enough you might qualify for general welfare, medicaid, or foodstamps.
