i am very confused like i said earlier there are several places in my divorce that it states that we have joint custody and then there are like 2 or 3 places that it says that she has sole custody Does it state that you have joint legal custody? If so that is not the same as Joint Custody. JLC gives you only the right to make limited decisions in the childs life. ex: medical and educational

 there is a place in the papers that says that we have joint custody of the children then it says that she has sole custody. I know that I have joint legal due to the fact that it says that and i have access to medical etc.. the part that i am confused about is that it says that the children will reside with the mother yet custody will be joint then if you continue to read the papers it says that she has sole custody. This is in illinois.

You should consult an attorney to understand what it is that you have in the decree. As a practical matter, joint custody means you both make decisions about the child equally together, but it sounds like she has physical custody or sole physical custody meaning the kids do not primarily reside with you. You should ahve some kind of visitation, but that depends on the situation. Sit down and make sure you understand the decree, and if you feel it is unfair, you may need to seek to modify or change it.
