I was a VP working in New York City at a company for 7 years. For 2 years I was pursued by another smaller company. Although happy at the first company, I was made so many promises (few of which held true) that it was hard to refuse. I left to join the smaller company as a VP. When joining I was offered a contract to sign, stating that I would receive 3 months severance should I be let go. I did not sign the contract as it also stated that I would have to give the company 3 months notice should I decide to leave. (No one will hire you if you say "give me 3 months and I will join your company".)
I was laid off after 8 months in May with 6 weeks severance. The reason I was laid off was supposidly due to loss of business. At the same time a man at a higher level was hired.
I was recently told by a friend that because I was a VP and was lured away from a very secure job, and then laid off, that I am due 4 months severance.
The company has offered to call people on my behalf to help me find another position. So far I am still unemployed. Am I owed more severance $$$?

Your friend is wrong. The law does not require that you be given any severance at all.

Since you did not sign the contract you are not entitled to the severance stated therein. That being the case, you are entitled to the amount of severance the company is willing to give you; no more, no less.
