I got my immigrant visa on December 30,2003 and I still need to activate it.
I will be travelling to the US next month for job interviews.
When my wife and I applied for my visa (DCF) we filled the address of my
wife's house in Miami.

My questions:

- I am going to travel alone. Is it a real problem when it's the first time
to activate the visa ?
- I am not going to enter at the POE in Miami but in Dallas. Is it a problem
(or the visa can be activate everywhere in the US ) ?
- How long does it take to get the driver's license ?

Thankx a lot !

That shouldn't be an issue.

Again it shouldn't be an issue; an immigrant visa can be activated at any
POE.

That depends on the state. In Virginia it took about three hours from
turning up at the DMV to walking out with my license a few years back.
However, to get to that point I needed proof of residency in Virginia that
took a little while to get - plus I had to study for the "written" part!

Andy.

Fabian, congratulations again! I agree with Andy's answers to your
questions; they track with my personal experience.

I have a favor to ask of you now: there are 2 posters at the marriage-
based group who are planning DCF in Belgium and they are looking for
recent Belgium-specific information. It would be lovely if you would
drop by and answer a couple of their questions. Thanks!

As a Belgian you will need to take a written AND a driving exam. At least
that's how it works in Texas. There is no way around it - I tried! :-)
Shouldn't be a problem, but get and read through the local traffic code
handbook to make sure you pass. (And avoid embarrassment!)
The one for Texas can be downloaded here:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ftp/forms/DLhandbook.pdf

If you go to one of the less-busy DL offices, you'll be outta there in a
couple of hours.

Not likely.

It can be used at any POE, although you should be prepared to explain why
you aren't entering near the address you gave.

Depends very much where you are going to live. Here in California, it
would probably take about eight months or more. You would first have to
apply for an SSN (unless the consulate already gave you one with the
immigrant visa - I hear that consulates do that upon request). Once you
have the SSN, you would then apply for your driver's license, take the
tests etc. Before they actually give you the license, they would submit
your information to USCIS for verification. That can take a while.

At least, that was the process a couple of years ago.
