An employer and employee may agree to either end the employment without the employee working the required notice period or agree to a shorter period of notice. Instead of having an employee work the notice period, the employer can choose to pay them wages in lieu of notice.

However, it is not mandated by law that an employer pay wages in liew of notice given.
