Can anyone tell me of areas of Toronto that I should avoid - I am looking at
rental properties all over, especially in downtown east, but am slightly
concerned about crime and safety. Can anyone recommend any good areas I
should be looking out for?

TIA

If you are looking at downtown east (East of Yonge, I assume), avoid
Jarvis Street and some parts of College Street East as they are very
shady. Also, as you go further down Queen Street, it gets a bit
dodgy as well.

The area just west of downtown between king and queen running to St.
Josephs hospital is godawful ugly (Parkdale) - (hookers and crack
addicts)
Jane and Finch is also pretty bad (same deal).
The area just east of downtown around Jarvis is pretty bad.

The suburbs are pretty nice (Mississauga, Brampton, North York etc).

South Etobicoke near the lake is ugly.
North/Mid Etobicoke east of the airport at Martindale and Eglinton is
ugly also.

I can't say about the east of the city but I have heard that
scarborough is not pretty.

What about the area marked with a red star here : http://tinyurl.com/fpve
Is it OK ? Or much too close to Jarvis ?

That's right. They are great and pretty silent, except some areas surrounding railway
(Mississauga).
