I work for a small municpal police department in South Carolina. We were told today that all off-duty personnel will be required to work on July 4 as the city is planning a fourth of July parade.

In the discussion of this parade, one of our councilmen stated it was illegal to force mandatory overtime on a Federal Holiday. Unsure where he received his information, I have been searching the net for an answer.

Can the city require this? If so, what is the proper compensation?

You are a public sector public service employee, so even if there were something written on mandatory overtime, it would not apply to you given the nature of your work, so long as occupational health and safety and public health and safety are not compromised.
