Illegal Immigration and House Bill 109 Stir Up Controversy

Feb. 26, 2004

Carole Mikita Reporting

Controversy on Capitol Hill as both the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and the Mexican consulate make it clear they don't like the way a
bill about illegal immigration is being handled.

It was unusual, but not unclear -- the Church issued a public statement that
it doesn't want to be part of the debate over a bill the Mexican government
says is blatant discrimination.

The issue has become very heated and it's very complicated, involving a bill
in the legislature, an immigration reform group, Mexican I.D. cards and
apparently temple recommends.

Joe Reyna, Advisor, Institute of Mexicans Abroad: "The group, Utahns for
Immigration Reform and enforcement, led by Mr. Matt Throckmorton, have one
objective in mind and one only -- to promote hatred against the Mexican
people living in the state of Utah."

George Monsivais/ spokesman The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
"The Church is investigating complaints that Utahns for Immigration Reform
are citing Church teachings as apparent justification for their political
positions."

Those very strong statements came during a news conference in the Capitol
rotunda this morning. Both the Church and the Mexican Consul are concerned,
for different reasons, about House Bill 109, preventing illegal immigration.
Passage of that bill would make an I.D. card issued through the consulate,
illegal.

Rep. Mike Thompson, (R) Orem: "I don't know what they're complaining about,
the Mexican consular card is a Mexican I.D. that does not say they're here
legally. And all we're saying is we have specifically delineated language of
what they have to do to prove that they are here legally."

At the consulate they showed us the process to get the I.D., called a
metricula --three forms of I.D. required-- and the database that stores that
information.

Arturo Chavarria Balleza, Consul of Mexico: "We want to be sure that people
who obtain a metricula consular is really Mexican national, and we are sure
about his identity."

As for the church's concern, apparently immigration reform members pushing
for this bill are quoting church tenets about obeying laws and suggesting
immigrants shouldn't obtain temple recommends -- or permission to enter a
temple -- without legal documentation.

The member of the board of Utahns for Immigration Reform who was citing
church doctrine has resigned, but the future of this bill is still
undecided.

Not nearly nervous enough. We'll know we're making good progress, when
they are scared of saying anything, lest it make things worse for
themselves. The trick is to keep raising the ante and push even more
effective legislation, not argue with them on their own terms. Give
them a political "attitude adjustment". They want to draw Americans
into their bull**** arguements so that you're wasting your time and
energy on them trading spitwads, rather then building momentum within
your own people and politicians, the only people that can make things
happen in our favor.

Calculate the probability of this American-type fellow learning
Espanol, in order to better accomodate Illegals and Non-assimulating
Others. It isn't like I, and most Americans for that matter, have
urgent need to communicate better with your barely-monolingual
colonists, zerge. I'm sure Mexicans would feel similarly, if there
were a plague of American Trailertrash flooding your nation with tens
of millions. A few will aspire to jobs that happen to require a lot of
multi-lingual usage, but not that many. Additionally, Spanish is not
an international language, apart from intercourse between hispano
countries. So there is little educational value from that aspect. If I
were to learn a new language(s) for that kind of reason, Spanish would
be quite a way down the list

As individuals, there is just as high a proportion of good people in a
Mexican population as in the American population, or any other. But
almost no one wants what the Mexican and latin-american nations have
to offer, not language, not the authentic culture, nothing really,
apart from a couple of specialty products. It's not that some of it
isn't adapted to feed trend-seeking pop culture, but if all things of
latino origin quietly disappeared tommorow, few would notice or feel a
loss, apart from latinos of course.

Ok, then parse out what you've just revealed there, and hear it again
as someone with plain-old native interests.

A people who carry a feeling inside that they would enjoy *dancing on
your grave* are not people who you are going trust to work in your
mutual interests (unless you are a candy-***, delusional american
politician). It's a psychology thing. In fact they may very well
volunteer to harm themselves in order to harm you. All the while
speaking a public claim of friendship and/or a productive
relationship. This is universal, incidentally: Couples do it,
organizations do it, and nations do it.

Another point follows: There is no cure for people like that. If you
try to appease people who claim such injury, it immediately devolves
into playing the apologetic clown for people who hate you and always
will. Soon you will be running your actions by people, who in no way
possess moral superiority, or any other sort. Quite typically, the
realty is opposite. If you're familiar with post-60s race relations in
the US, its associated poltical industry, then you'll know from where
we got the harder lessons on that. If you succeed in meeting every
claim of injury THEN they hate you because they don't respect you: why
would they respect a big, powerful man who kisses their *** on demand?
So you see, there is no winning for playing that game.

Both of those points above are almost precisely descriptive of the
relationship between Mexico and the US. People who deny those facts,
and who are not dullards, are fight-mongers. I cannot call myself any
better, I type on Usenet after all, but at least I'm not a jackass
who'll deny all this, sure that I'm fooling everybody as I choose.

A third observation apropos: The universal tendency to cling to a
destructive mutual embrace, and increase it. In the apparent belief
that the other person or party will either die, or change to your
likng. This is one of the stupidest things human beings do, but will
virtually always do, if you do not force them to decouple, and make
sure they stay decoupled. You can reliably parse the well-meaning
people on this issue from the real ****heads, by forcing this decision
upon them. The ****heads will instinctively choose to stay in the
embace, sure that they can "change" the opposition in their favor.

All these things are principle pillars of the real relationship
between the US and Mexico. It will NOT get better while that is so,
and there is NOTHING anyone can do about it. Except decouple. The
countries are not capable of pleasing each other whilst pleasing
themselves. It will be at the expense of one or both nations. That
will not change by way of any deliberate plan carried out for that
purpose, and not in a time frame that anyone here would much care
about.

So, might as well learn Español! >www.studyspanish.com Calculate the probability of this American-type fellow learning Espanol, in order to better accomodate Illegals and Non-assimulating Others. It isn't like I, and most Americans for that matter, have urgent need to communicate better with your barely-monolingual colonists, zerge. I'm sure Mexicans would feel similarly, if there were a plague of American Trailertrash flooding your nation with tens of millions. A few will aspire to jobs that happen to require a lot of multi-lingual usage, but not that many. Additionally, Spanish is not an international language, apart from intercourse between hispano countries. So there is little educational value from that aspect. If I were to learn a new language(s) for that kind of reason, Spanish would be quite a way down the list As individuals, there is just as high a proportion of good people in a Mexican population as in the American population, or any other. But almost no one wants what the Mexican and latin-american nations have to offer, not language, not the authentic culture, nothing really, apart from a couple of specialty products. It's not that some of it isn't adapted to feed trend-seeking pop culture, but if all things of latino origin quietly disappeared tommorow, few would notice or feel a loss, apart from latinos of course.Well goodness gracious, of course! :)But believe me when I tell you, if the US where to dissapear tomorrow, millions upon millions of people would dance with happiness around theworld, regardless of the economic and cultural losses. Let's just sayyou have thrown your weight around carelessly during the past century:)Oh, and just for the record, I would not be one of those dancing;despite everything, I DO like many things about the US. ;) Ok, then parse out what you've just revealed there, and hear it again as someone with plain-old native interests. A people who carry a feeling inside that they would enjoy *dancing on your grave* are not people who you are going trust to work in your mutual interests (unless you are a candy-***, delusional american politician). It's a psychology thing. In fact they may very well volunteer to harm themselves in order to harm you. All the while speaking a public claim of friendship and/or a productive relationship. This is universal, incidentally: Couples do it, organizations do it, and nations do it. Another point follows: There is no cure for people like that. You speak the truth, and in an ellocuent manner. And unfortunately,
this dynamic you describe is not only between the US and Mexico,
although it is the dominant one for us. But the US, AND Mexico, has
such "couplings" as you call them, with many countries in the world:
China and Europe for example. We are living the painful process of
globalization. At the end we may either reach a worldwide Utopia of
peace and prosperity, or we may be back to the stone age. Either way,
the path will be long and painful.
