Police officer badly hurt by hit-run in school zone

By Jim Kirksey and Kieran Nicholson Denver Post Staff Writers

A Denver police officer was seriously injured when he was run down while
operating a radar gun in a school zone in southwest Denver on Thursday
afternoon, authorities said.

After hitting the officer, the suspect, who police believe was drunk or
high, sped away and was involved in a crash two blocks away, police said.

"He raced his engine and intentionally gunned it and hit the officer
head-on," police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said.

A second officer was injured when she was struck by a car while directing
traffic near the scene about 2 1/2 hours later. Her injuries were not
thought to be serious, but she was put on a stretcher and placed in an
ambulance.

Police identified the injured female officer as Cari O'Hayre. A District 4
officer, she has been with the department since 2000.

The name of the male traffic officer who was run down was being withheld
Thursday night because police were unable to contact an out-of-state
relative, Lopez said.

That officer was at Denver Health Medical Center with a broken leg and other
injuries Thursday night, according to police spokesman John White. His
injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, White said.

The hit-and-run suspect and the driver of the car he ran into two blocks
away, reportedly an elderly man, were taken to the hospital. Their
conditions were not available.

The suspect is a 19-year-old Mexican citizen, Lopez said, and his name was
withheld because he wasn't carrying any identification.

Investigators believe the suspect was under the influence of drugs or
alcohol, and police are awaiting the return of toxicology tests, Lopez said.

The hit-and-run happened as the officer was checking for speeders on West
Florida Avenue at South Vrain Way about 3:25 p.m.

He had flagged down a car, motioning for it to pull over. As the officer was
walking to the car, the driver of a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck behind the
car gunned its engine and ran down the officer, police said.

The pickup continued east on West Florida, ran a red light two blocks away
and hit a Nissan Maxima broadside. Another truck was also involved in the
accident.

West Florida was closed between South Vrain Way and South Tennyson Street as
police worked the scene.

"It sounded like a bomb," said Bernice Murphy, who witnessed the collision
at Tennyson. "It was awful."

Murphy, a clerk at the Florida Avenue Market in the Mar Lee shopping center,
was standing outside the store talking to her son on the telephone when the
truck "came through the light and nailed the other car," Murphy said. "He
was running from the cop down the street."

She said speeders are common along West Florida and police patrol the area
thoroughly in the morning when school starts at Force Elementary School and
in the afternoon when it lets out.

"It scares me," Murphy said of the speeding. "I seen a kid at the school get
hit at the crossing light."

Concerned police officers flocked to Denver Health Medical Center, seeking
news of the injured officer. Ten patrol cars were in front of the hospital
as officers guarded the emergency entrance.

Officer Snow White said police from other districts went to the hospital to
get information to relay back to fellow officers.

"We're all upset. We're all hoping for the best," White said. "It's just
kind of a reminder what we do every day. Every second, something can go
wrong."

Division Chief Steve Cooper was also worried.

"It's horrible. It's terrible. You don't know if he is going to live or
die," Cooper said soon after he arrived at the hospital.

Force Elementary principal Ann Myers said some students and staff saw the
crash and several gave police interviews. Counselors will be on hand at the
school today to help any student who feels traumatized by the incident,
Myers said.

Police patrol the 20-mph school zone on West Florida Avenue "very
regularly," the principal said. Speeding drivers are a problem, just as in
any part of the city where young children are close to a busy road, she
said.

"Think of any major street that has a school on it. We're not the only one,"
Myers said.

Post staff writers Kirk Mitchell and Sean Kelly and correspondent Marilyn
Robinson contributed to this report.

The inflamatory language doesn't do much to promote the cause that I believe
you are trying to communicate, one that I believe I would support too. But
that is a little besides the point for this reply.

The point I want to make relates to a similar situation here in Salt Lake
City.

A while ago we had a policeman ran over and killed while on bike patrol. The
offender jumped the curb while speeding. I don't remember his sobriety
situation. But he was an illegal Mexican alien. He was jailed originally but
the pollitically correct whiners got him released over the objections of
everyone that knew that he was outa here the second he was released.
Obviously he never showed up for trial and has not been seen since. An I
believe that the politically correct whiners that posted some sort of very
minimal bond, got there money back as well.

That's wrong. I expect that the same "poor driver" mentality will rear it's
ugly head in Denver as well. Perhaps some activists for true equality,
without the language that will shoot you down before you get started, can
use this story to make sure that the guy at least shows up for trial. No
matter his nationality.

They're legally present in the United States. We have enough homegrown drunks and criminals without having to

and kicked across upon detection... whether or not they commit additional crimes. If the feds won't do it,
maybe citizens should.

And, it's harder for us to take on a new identity, gran new phony documents,
and disappear into a morass of millions who will assist us in evading the
law.

If I went to my friends and family and expected them to assist me after
running down a cop I would NOT be aided and abetted the way the illegals
help each other. In fact, most would call the law and tell them where to
find me. I would not expect any less for they are people of honor, unlike

would have done all I could to assist the one I hit.

Filthy spics.

Hey, you supporters of those vile creatures.... consider that every time
your bretheren harms or kills a citizen the one harmed or killed has
friends, family and co-workers that will likely learn how to hate you scum.

As the illegals continuously abuse us the number of Americans angered enough
to extract revenge grows. Perhaps some day it will be..........
