I am an exempt employee in IL. I have 2 questions:
1) My boss requires me to take PTO in half day increments. For example, if I work more than 4 but less than 8 hours a day, he wants me to take 4 hours PTO. If I work less than 4 hours, he wants me to take 8 hours PTO. Is this legal?
2) My boss wants me to work at least 8 hours a day. Don't exempt employees have flexibility in their schedule or is it up to the employer's discretion? I would like to work some longer and some shorter days, but he says there is no such thing as comp time for exempt employees. Is comp time legal?

If I work less than 4 hours, he wants me to take 8 hours PTO. Is this legal? If you work LESS than 4 hours, he wants you to take a full day of PTO? That doesn't make any sense (at least to me) but it's not illegal.

You are misunderstanding what exempt status means. It means ONLY that you must be paid in a certain manner. It does not mean that you get to set your own work schedule and come and go as you please. Your employer determines your hours of work, not you.

I would like to work some longer and some shorter days, but he says there is no such thing as comp time for exempt employees. Is comp time legal? Comp time for exempt employees is not illegal but it's not required either. It's entirely a matter of company policy. For what it's worth, in my experience most employers in the private sector do NOT offer comp time. Exempt employees work, at a minimum, the schedule their employer dictates, plus any additional hours the workload requires. If the employer wishes to allow some work schedule flexibility or provide comp time, that is entirely up to each individual employer.
