Aiming is not necessary, and doesn't help anyway. If you want a shooting
analogy, it is closer to a shotgun than a handgun or rifle. The radar
beam goes out in a conical shape, not a narrow beam. The farther away
from the source, the bigger the area it covers. So an object can be
off center and still be measured. Of course, the cop has no way of knowing
that.
