Isn't 911 supposed to be an *emergency* thing?Where was the emergency here?

911 was originally started for emergencies only.
However, in many areas it evolved into a consolidated central number for
any police calls.

I know that here I used to always call the local police number, simply to
be told to call 911... so now I just call 911 directly.

why in the world do you have to call the police so much?

some communities are implementing a "311" 0r "611" service for
non-emergency police matters like to report: a lost dog, a accident NOT
involving P.I., etc.
