I was hired three years ago for three graveyard shifts at a Fortune 500 company in California. I went full time almost two years ago, continuing the three graveyards and working Wednesday and Thursday various shifts, going to full time graves several months ago. I am part of an eight man team, and they are constantly changing the shifts for everyone on day shift. They are going to eradicate the graveyard shift and move me to days, various shifts ("day" shifts will range from 4:30 am to 10:30 pm, eight hours) including weekends. I have three children, 11, 13 15 whose demands on me during the day necessitate some stability in my shifts. Can I leave the position because I am not being offered a regular shift and collect unemployment until I find another position? I have always had a regular schedule. They publish schedule two or three weeks in advance which is not sufficient to schedule stable arrangements.

Thanks.

I very much doubt that even in CA, which is unquestionably the most employee friendly state in the US, not having a regular shift will qualify as "good cause to quit" and still receive unemployment benefits. You are free to ask the UC office about it, however, as who can and cannot receive UC is very situation- as well as state-specific.
