I work for a company in new jersey. In our employee hand book it states that "overtime is not manditory, but if needed you are required to work, and if asked repeatedly and still no not do it you can get wriiten up" my question is can they put a certain time on that. They are saying that we must work 10hours overtime manditory a week, 50 hour weeks. Is that legal, what if we just did 5 a week can we get in trouble since they state that it is not maditory? And if you miss a day and use your personal time is it legal for them to tell you you have to make them 8 hours up and also work the two overtime hours?

Forced overtime ended in NJ in 2004

I think about all you can do is anonymously report your employer to the state. I think if you made it a point to bring it up you might get terminated, so be careful how you proceed.

Just an FYI: the link that states "NJ stops forced overtime" is specifically covers hospitals, nursing homes and home health care workers.

my boyfriend works for a company that just moved to jersey...they used to have their office in pa...and they would make it mandatory for drivers (they are a shipping company) to work every 7th saturday...and each driver had his own rotation schedule...i've heard that it is illegal to require employees in new jersey to work mandatory overtime...and this definitely qualifies...it's not even during the work week...so that in itself makes things seem a little more illegal...anyway, is this argument valid? is this company going completely against new jersey laws by making its drivers work on saturdays? please let me know. and if that is the case and they are breaking the law, then please inform me of what to tell him to do...thanks so much...
