I have been working for a merchandising company for six months, I received approximately one hour of training on serviceing my stores and was given a video of other situations they I might have to deal with in the stores. One of the other thing was a credit to the store for unwanted merchandise. I misunderstood the credit part of the video and when I went to do oa credit at the store I left the store with the merchandise without leaving them the paperwork. I was asked to return to the store and I explained my mistake and they told me what to do with the merchandise and I of course did. When I left the store with the merchandise, I told the service desk employee who I was and what I was doing. It was obvious that I did not mean to steal the merchandise. I thought I shipped it back to the company and they issues the store a credit when the merchandise was received. As i said no one ever showed me the paperwork or how to do the credit but I thought I remembered from the video. The next week I was called into the back room of the store with a corporate Kroger guy,the head of loss prevention and the very hateful store manager and went through 30 minute interrogation which left me in tears and gave me a migraine headache so severe that I stayeed in bed the rest of the day. They spoke with my boss and they told him that they felt it was an honest mistake and they felt bad thet I was so upset. A couple of days later no one else in my company would go service this store so I decided to take the high road and I serviced the store. Our product looked great when I was done. I spoke to the store manager(but only a greeting). Yesterday my boss call to inform me that Kroger says I showed little respect for them in the meeting(the one where I was reduced to tears) and they had me fired from my job. I called the person responsible for the firing and he refusing to give me an answer or his bosses name so I can get an answer from him. I loved this job and I don't feel I deserved to be fired over a mistake. Does anyone have any advice for me?

First let me say, I am sorry to hear of your misfortune.
Get in writing the EXACT reason you were fired and make sure you add YOUR VERSION of it. Document everything.
Your best bet now would be to file for unemployment immediately since it is NOT retroactive, it begins the week in which you file.
In answer to your question, yes, you can be fired for a mistake. Am employer can terminate an employee at thier will as long as it is not discriminatory in nature, i.e. age, sex. religion, race, etc.
Keep us informed and best wishes.
