I dont know about that..... but I thought that when you letter expires
you can go to your local office and ask for I-551 stamp (which is valid
for 1 year)

Forgive my ignorance, but what is that? I
think we're talking about two different things...

It's for the I-129F... Long story short,
It's passed the expiration date, but we wanted to use it to get his
Driver's License, as Arlington does not issue an NOA, I-797 for AOS/EAD.
So we need one that isn't expired.

Even if
it were possible, which it isn't in this instance, it would not do him
any good for the purpose you are suggesting. That I-797 is for the I-129F/K-
1 not for the right to live in the US.

Yes but the DMV, here in
Virginia, will take it as proof of legal presence. And since they passed
the law effective January 1st, that you now have to prove that as well
as being a resident, as well proof of identifity and proof of social
security number.

But they
won't take it expired, which led me to ask the question, can I get it
extended, or can I request one for the AOS/EAD?
