Hi, When I first read your post, I thought "pick my fiancee" I imagined you in some foreign country with a long line of potential fiancee's, trying to select one. The I realized you meant "pick-up" your fiancee. Anyway, just my non'sensical humour. I am concerned that JFK Airport people might read the contents of the brown envelope thouroughly and might have problems believing that Farhan flew to Pakistan, came back with her on the same plane and that they have YET TO MEET and they have no plans of meeting until January 10th. This may due to CBP's disrespect for the culture of his orginal home country and a lack of belief that Farhan is disciplined enough to comply with the requirements of his fiance's culture. Again, I wish him all the luck. -- Certified Specialist Immigration & Nat. Law Cal. " I am leaving tomorrow to pick my fiancee" missed out the "up" Roger -- Posted via http://britishexpats.com Elenfair 11-20-2003, 07:24 AM I wish you all the best, farhan. What scares me is the POE and what farhan said about not being able to meet his fiancee in person for cultural reasons before the marriage. Now he's going to pick her up. He even had to send RFE information to prove this was a valid "cultural" exception claim. My experience at the Ottawa POE was good - the guys there KNOW me and have seen me travel a LOT (and they adore my service dog!) Even so, they went through the contents of my brown envelope CAREFULLY. They teased me a lot and asked about my fiance and how we met n' stuff (and since it was early and quiet in there, other POE guys came by and petted the dog and chatted away...) I almost missed my flight to the US, but they rushed as much as their two finger typing skills could! They even let me go before they were completley done entering stuff into the computer! Bless their cotton socks! So - given that experience... I'm from Ottawa, Canada. The POE guys know me well. They went through the contents of my envelope with a fine tooth comb. Farhan will be coming back from Pakistan (which can raise the nervousness of the POE officers to begin with) with his fiancee, through JFK. I'm SURE they will examine the contents of his packet carefully. I just hope it won't screw him over now... or even at the AOS interview. I really REALLY wish Farhan well. I really do. I'm just scared that two good people who want to be together will end up separated because of technicalities they failed to follow... *sigh* All the best, farhan. Let us know how it went. Who/what/where do I look to figure this out? Hi: I put "international" in quotes becuase it was an absurd description. There is no such thing as an "international divorce." To paraphrase the late Tip O'Niel: all divorces are local. The tricky part comes up when that divorce determines something else, often years later and in a different jurisdiction. Usually this is with remarriage, inheritance, paternity, and what not. As noted in the prior dicussion of "residence" -- this can be an "analytical hornets nest". Get your paperwork to a lawyer and pay her to figure it out. You might want to ask if she took "conflicts" in Law School. It was a required course at my school, but much to me surprise, it is no longer required at most law schools. I have no idea why -- I run into "choice of law" problems all the time. -- Certified Specialist Immigration & Nat. Law Cal.
