My K-1 petition was sent to Guangzhou from NVC almost three months ago, and
there has been no news whatsoever after that, except for the e-mail
responses, to my weekly queries, from the consulate which usually goes
something like "we have not received your case from the NVC, rest assured
blah blah blah..." So I sent off a letter requesting help from my
congresswoman Anna Eshoo last week. Hopefully she can help...
In the meantime, I'd like to take a poll here. For those of you who have
written your congressional representatives about these immigration matters,
have writing to them actually made a difference? How long did it take them
to respond to you and help you?
Just in scanning the newsgroups, it seems that some congressional
representatives are more helpful than others. Can you share your good (or
bad :-)) experiences with our elected officials?
Oh, one more thing. Anyone have any experience with Anna Eshoo? :-)
Thanks,
Jerry

CAll them and ask for the immigration liason...and thank them publicly
iof possible or take them to task. A letter or e-mail is too easily
ignored or lost.

Jerry -
I don't know, man, they're all different. I specifically didn't send a
letter to my representative because she is closely allied with the now
infamous Rep. Tancredo, the anti-immigration jerk from Colorado. So I
started with the Senator from my hometown, his staff (feels like a bunch
of part-timers who are students or do something else full time) were
worthless, very poor on follow-up, no meaningful assistance. Then I
tried my other US Senator, whose staff at least promptly responded with
a letter that said they would forward my letter to the FBI (it was about
the name check procedure). But nothing really happened until I faxed a
copy of my letter to my senator to the FBI, requesting their assistance
in determining what the holdup was.
That was what started things moving for me. Then, the FBI sent their
findings to my senator's office and I had to call them and ask for a
copy to be sent to me.
I have heard both better and worse stories about other's reps or
senators. If you are lucky, you have a rep or senator who gives a crap,
if you're not, you get nothing from them. The response you get from
them is VERY inconsistent. Good luck with yours, but be prepared to try
someone else, don't wait too long to give up on them if they don't
respond promptly. For the most part, it is just another case to them,
to you, it is your life. All the best to you, and thanks for your web
site, I like the look of it, very clean and uncluttered.

I wrote both of my Senators and my Congresswoman, mainly out of
frustation, not in hopes of getting action.
My Congresswoman responded in 2 days to my email. Someone from her
office called and asked for additional information and copies of the
receipts from BCIS. She was very knowledgeable about immigration and
said she would contact BCIS. She called back the next day and said they
were processing our case now and it should be complete within two weeks.
She also said that if nothing happened in two weeks she would
investigate further.
I was very impressed. I expected no response, which is what I got from
the Senators.
The initial call did little more than get me status, which was verified
by the 10/15/03 status report from the service center. I really feel
that if nothing happens in the next two weeks, they will call again and
try to get things moving.
Again, I was very impressed and appreciative. The whole time frame from
email to status reponse was 7 days. But, obviously your mileage will
vary depending on your rep.

I wrote an email to my Senator's office (Virginia) and a liasion called
me the same day. He called up to Vermont and gave me a timeline of 2-4
more weeks and siad it was "in the pile" on someone's desk. 2 weeks
later we were approved and I called him back to let him know and thank
him. I'm not sure if his call actually helped, but thought it couldn't
hurt anyway. Good luck to you!

I do, and I think that her office is worth contacting. Her immigration
liaison, Patty, did appear to make inquiries on my behalf after I wrote
a 4-page tome in mid-March *****ing about my petition and asking for
help. She called me within a few days of getting the letter, and my RFE
was received about a week later. I do not know if that office is the
reason that my RFE was processed with lightning speed or not once I
returned the requested information (which BCIS already had), but I
imagine that her office's involvement didn't hurt. The timeline between
my initial contact with Eshoo's office and my NOA-2, including the 2 1/2
weeks for the RFE processing, was less than a month.

I have been patient so far, but the wait is getting ridiculous. I am
on the verge of breaking down and having one of my elected officials
get involved. My senators are Mrs. Clinton and Charles Schumer. I
strongly dislike Schumer so I've ruled him out already. Then I'm left
with my rep, Vito Fossella. So does anyone have any experience with
Clinton or Fossella or have any suggestions if I should contact the rep
or senator first??

My Congresswoman is Susan Davis. She serves the 53rd district here in San Diego, CA.
Ny Senators are Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein.
I just got an email this morning from Senator Boxer's office. They need written consent to proceed. I might wait on this since Susan Davis' office has already called.

If you had read Jerry's post carefully, he mentioned that Anna Eshoo is
his rep. By the way, we got the message the first time.

Thanks for the info! I sent a letter about two weeks ago but haven't heard
from anyone. I'll give them another week or so and I'll give her office a
ring. I assumed you called her Palo Alto office?
I had heard less than flattering things about Boxer and Feinstein so I never
bothered trying with them. I'm glad to heat that Eshoo's office is
responsive to constituents.
Someone should put a list like this together... Which reps are worth
contacting and which ones aren't...
Thanks again!

One thing I've learned form contacting my rep and my senators is that
they need written consent in order to open a formal inquiry. I sent m y

Regarding BCIS/SSA issues, we contacted our Congressman, John Kline
(MN), and his staff was professional, courteous and quick.
They did ask for written authorization and then they followed up
immediately. Problem was resolved quickly.
After all was said and done I sent them a thank you card as I was very
impressed with the service we received.
