What are the laws in the State of NJ on Maternity Leave? I thought your employer has to pay you for a certain amount of time if the company is larger then 50 people

No, there is no such law. There are requirements that a covered employer must give the employee a paid leave. There are requirements for unpaid leaves. You can read more about the federal and state leave laws at: http://www.dol.gov/esa/programs/whd/state/fmla/nj.htm

NJ is one of a few states with a mandated temporary disability program. You can read about it at: http://www.nj.gov/labor/tdi/faq.htm

The NJ temporary disability program does not provide for a guarantee of a leave. That is left to the federal FMLA or the NJ equivalent, both of which require the employer to have at least 50 employees.
