I live in Florida. I am a Nurse and work for the State. Walking and standing are parts of my job. I have had a joint fusion on my left foot in 2001. No ensuing problems. Over the last few months I have developed a problem which will need surgical correction and may be off of work for several months. working is compounding the problem. I have short term disability and long term disability insurance, . I would like to know however if I can file for workman's compensation as well to augment my salary. Please advise.

You can always file but the great probably is that your claim will be denied. Workers Compensation is designed to assist employees with an injury or illness that occurs "out of and in the course of employment". Since your condition occurred out of a pre-existing condition, it would be difficult for you to show that it was only your work that aggravated your condition...as opposed to your personal life.
