Hi everyone...
I've been lurking in the shadows, occaisionally posting & just
generally gathering tips and info from you fabulous folks for a while
and I've noticed that the majority of posters are US/UK couples. I'd
be really interested in any K1 experiences (I130 filing, interview,
how long it took to get your EAD, whatever!) from Canadian/American
couples. My boyfriend (USC - Gainesville, FL) and I (Canadian -
Vancouver, BC) are considering starting the process and we'd really
like to hear from anyone who can offer any advice/info/help. I've
found some great websites from some of you, and those have been
totally helpful, but if anybody can provide a little info about their
process, it would be totally appreciated!
One specific question - my boyfriend is a grad student and I'm
worried that he may not be able to meet the financial requirements for
the Affadavit of Support. Has anyone had any experience with this,
specifically? I'm assuming we could use his parents as sponsors, but
i'm not sure...
Sorry if these are dumb questions - researching this whole K1
process has confused me beyond belief...don't know if i'll ever
recover (especially since we haven't even STARTED the process - it
just seems to get better and better...lol)
Thanks,
Katie

We're Canada/US, and there are quite a few people on here who are as
well. Jim (USC) is in the Los Angeles area, and I'm in Montreal. Ours
is an I-129f case, and I would highly recommend going the fiance visa
way instead of the I-130 since, as I gather, you two are not married
yet. It's generally a faster process, especially for Canadians. I'm
not sure which service center processes Florida cases, but if by any
chance it's Vermont then you will be lucky ducks.
As for you affidavit of support question, yes his parents could
co-sponsor you (though he will have to be the primary sponsor no
matter what). Just remember to count *everyone* in your calculations
when you check if their income is 125% of the poverty level. So you,
your fiance, his parents, and anyone else dependent on them.
Best of luck when you start the process!

If you are taking the fiancée route, and your US citizen lives in FL, your
service centre is Texas.
Read as much as you can on the whole process, then ask your questions. There
are many wonderful folks at this NG who can steer you in the right

I see he's a grad student (presumably at UF)....
On the offchance that you're a student in the US too, you can skip the
whole I-129 process and just marry and adjust status. But, of course,
that's not likely.
What I (in the Dallas/FW area) and my bride (Toronto) found to work
pretty well was to drive to the border, activate her I-129, and then
get hitched in the most convenient border town to her folks (in this
case, Niagara Falls NY). Is there anywhere nice in Bellingham etc?
Or you could split the distance and marry in Omaha....

No, they don't. The service center has nothing to do with where the
foreign fiance is from, but rather where the USC lives. Jim lives in
California, so we went through CSC.

In the case of a USC and Canadian Citizen married and living in Canada,
yes they have to go through Nebraska.
However, if they are married and the USC is living in the US and the
Canadian in Canada, they use the service center governing where the USC
is living.
The same holds true with the I-129F for the K-1.
