Our company is planning cutting hours of our employees to reduce the cost, I have a few questions:

1. if we cut one day a week (8 hours), can hourly employee collect unemployment ?

2. If exempt employees Volunteer to takes one day off without pay every week, can we deduct their pay.

3. We are trying not to cut exempt employees salary, but if we only close for one day and they are not willing to take unpaid day off, what is other option ?

Appreciated every advices .

1. Possibly, after a one-week waiting period.

2. Maybe. Although the salary of an exempt employee may be docked for full day absences due to "personal reasons", a not-too-happy employee could theoretically file a wage claim, stating that he was "pressured" to volunteer to take the day off as a personal day by the employer. Could work, might not work.

3. Other than cutting the salary on a go-forward basis (and leaving the hours alone), not much.

We've discussed this quite a bit on this site lately. Try the search function of "furlough" or something like that.
