I am writing this for my mother, she is a nurse and has been diagnosed with MS. She hasn't told her employer of her illness, her doctor has recommended that she file for disability. He biggest concern is that she will not have medical benefits, what are her options?

I'm so sorry for your mother. MS is a serious disease, one that may qualify its victims as covered under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Why is this important? Because it means that her employer cannot terminate her or her medical insurance just for having this disease. If she gets to the point where she cannot work, termination may occur if that is consistent with their policy with other employees who cannot perform their responsibilities. In addition, the Act requires that her employer provide her "reasonable accommodation". Whether an accommodation is reasonable or not depends on a number of factors, such as the size of the employer, etc. However, it can mean things such as an easier shift schedule, etc.
There are a couple of resources that you may wish to look into. You may wish to contact the National MS Society. (Their website is at: http://www.nmss.org/) Another is her employer itself and the company's insurer. I wish I could assist you further.
