You need to familiarize yourself with landlord-tenant law in Alabama (if you google it, there are plenty of links you can follow) but, to the best of my knowledge, there are no laws that gives you the blanket ability to withhold rent. Even if there is, normally what you need to do is inform the landlord first, then deposit the rent with a neutral third party (court, landlord-tenant agency, etc.). If the landlord has failed to make necessary repairs, your recourse is usually to report the situation to the agencies that conducts housing inspections.

By failing to pay rent, you've given the landlord the opportunity to immediately start eviction proceedings.
