I recently lost my job. I would like to move to reduce my rent and get into a better school district.

Due to the circumstances of my "departure" from my job, coupled with this bad economy, I applied for and received a business license. Because people were always trying to hire me whenever I told people what I did for a living, I believe I can eventually have a solid income. I have at least two years of my previous salary in savings, which is providing a significant cushion.

My question is, do I have to be employed by a company, or to have an established business, in order to rent an apartment? Is it enough to have a very large money market account?

That's entirely up to the landlord of the apartment. The law does not address the question either way.

Hmmm. Interesting question.

How does your new landlord expect that you prove you're employed? Ask your employer? But you're self employed, so what do they expect to do then? Ask your customers?

I suspect all you have to do is tell them you are self-employed, and I really don't think they can act on you not providing details that could be deleterious to your business.

And I don't think it's a good idea to give much details on your money market account. So long as you pass their background and have the cash, who cares?

You won't know until you try!

Thank you for your responses.

My guess is that freelancers and business owners got to live somewhere. They can't turn us all away. I have excellent credit and I've never been evicted. I'm hoping that will count for something!

With what you just said, no reason for any trouble. I wish ya lots of luck!
