View Full Version : Indiana - Sewage and rent problem

About two weeks ago, our house had a weird, musty smell all of the sudden. When we checked the basement, we noticed our water was not draining into the drain. We immediately called the landlord because it smelled like sewage. He said he'd have to wait until Monday because they would charge him extra for a weekend trip. HE ended up doing the work on Tuesday, but it still smelled like sewage AND now we had a problem with it smelling like mold and dirt. That weekend, he called and said that we had a "small" water leak in the bathroom. When we came by and checked, the water was literally spraying out of the pipe onto the wall, and COVERING the tile on the floor. It was so wet that the grout had turned back to mud. The tile cracked when we walked on it. The floor is bowed where the water had pooled, and it feels like it might cave in when we walk on it. We've already called the Indianapolis Board of Health for them to come out and check if it is livable (no call back yet - could be another week). What else can we do? What kind of proof do we need if we don't pay rent? If we don't pay rent, are we still under the eviction clause? Can we get some sort of repayment from him with the bills that we have? We have been living in a hotel for 10 days. We've already spent more than our rent here. The landlord has been a real a$$ about getting things done. Another couple of days in one room is what we have to look forward to! Thanks in advance to anyone that can help us out on this!!!

Call the rental housing inspector, instead of the board of health.
