I took 12 weeks off work using six weeks of California disability and six weeks of paid family leave. The state programs covered roughly half my salary and my company paid the rest in sick time.

My company deducted 8 hours a day of sick time for every day I was out, despite the fact that they only paid for half that time.

Is that legal? Do I have any way to challenge that?
Thanks very much.

This is not my area of expertise, but I believe that because they were supplementing your SDI and PFL, they are only allowed to charge you for the time they actually used to supplement. In fact, I think that if you are using sick time to make up your entire salary, you are not entitled to SDI. So, the fact that they are charging you 8 hours makes it seem like you should not have received any SDI. Of course your pay check should reflect otherwise. I would call into the EDD and ask for clarification.
