I was asked to come in on my day off, I told them I will pick up the shift but not trade the shift. It would not be putting me over 40 hours so I thought it would be fair. They said no so I said I would rather go on with my plans I had already made. I left my phone at home and later got a call telling me that my hours were reduced for the next day. Also the schedule was changed for the rest of the week reducing my hours. I have never called in sick or said no to them calling me in, in the last 2 years. There has been so many times I have helped out and ended up loosing hours because the shifts I was picking up were not as long as the shift I gave up. I have been a very dedicated employee and was also told so. Can am employer reduce hours once a schedule is up and is this retaliation ok to do??

One more question I am looking for a new job and I have seen my employer in the past let people go once they give a 2 week notice and not let them come back is that also legal? I have heard that he has to pay you for the 2 weeks if they don't want you to come in. I am not wanting to leave on a bad note and not give a 2 week notice but I am not wanting to go without pay for 2 weeks either after I tell my new employer I would need to give a 2 week notice.

Sorry for thow long this is just wanting to know what is right or wrong.

Unfair or petty, perhaps, but legal.

It is also legal (and sometimes preferable) to accept a resignation immediately without allowing the employee to work out a reasonable notice period. There is no wage and hour law that would require the employer pay the employee through the notice period, although many employers do. That would invoke, however, the "final paycheck immediately" regulation in California.
